Emergency Water Storage, Pouches & Purification
Imagine: several of your city’s water mains break down, and you can no longer rely on your faucets for drinking water. Construction crews estimate that it will take a week to get back on the grid. Are you prepared? If you live in a particularly dry region–would you be ready if your town ran out of water completely?
A human being can survive an average of 21 days without food, and only 3-5 days without water. Even if you don’t have any other resources for emergency preparedness, having an emergency supply of water on hand is the one thing that you must invest in as it can save your life.
How Much Water Should I Store?
The exact amount of water you’ll want to have in storage will depend on a number of factors, but a good general rule is to have at least one gallon of water per person per day–that’s one-half gallon for drinking and one-half gallon for hygiene. If you live in a hot/dry area, or if you know that there will be pregnant or nursing women around, then you’re going to want to increase that amount.
How Long Should You Prepare For?
The CDC recommends that emergency water storage should include a minimum of a 3-day supply for each person (and don’t forget about pets! They need water, too). Ideally, you should have a two-week water storage on hand.
A three day water supply for a family of four with two pets would be approximately 18 gallons (1 gallon for 6 water-needing individuals x 3 days) and a two week supply would be 84 gallons (1 gallon for 6 water-needing individuals x 14 days).
Our Emergency Water Supply Solutions
Living Rational offers several options for long-term, bulk water storage that will ensure that you and your family will have clean water when you need it the most. Our 15 Gallon and 30 Gallon Bulk Water Storage Kits are made of FDA-approved materials that won’t contaminate your water supply.
Each kit includes a 15 or 30 gallon drum, a premium water siphon pump, a bung cap wrench, a drum “fill date” card, and a package of concentrated water preserver. We also recommend that you include a 20-Pack of Micropur Water Purification Tablets with your emergency water supply to keep your water fresh and potable.
If you’re seeking a more compact option, consider Living Rational’s 5 Gallon Collapsible Water Jug. This is a fantastic option to bring on camping, hiking, and hunting trips, or to keep tucked away with your emergency water storage as a possible supplement–just pull it out and fill it up when you feel you are at risk of losing access to your usual water supply. These jugs fold flat for compact storage and are extremely lightweight. They can also be used as makeshift showers.
The CDC recommends that you also include a bottle of unscented liquid household chlorine bleach (8.25% sodium hypochlorite) on hand to disinfect your water, or anything else that needs cleaning or sanitizing.
Emergency Grab-and-Go Hydration
No one should ever be forced to leave their home at a moment’s notice without any idea if or when return is possible. Sadly, this is daily reality for people across the globe. Wildfires, earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes come, and suddenly, you and your family have no choice but to rely on the kindness of strangers and emergency assistance organization.
Being truly prepared means leaving nothing up to chance. In addition to your bulk water storage, it is essential to have drinking water that you can take anywhere at anytime. Living Rational offers both drinking water packets and a lightweight HydroPack Emergency Water Filter. These options are small enough that they can be tucked into your glovebox, disaster pack, or desk drawer for easy access.
Water Purification for Survival
If you’re miles away from a working faucet, the last thing that you need is to expend valuable time and energy to make the water around you drinkable. Don’t let yourself get stuck building fires to boil water–Living Rational’s selection of innovative portable water filters will have you hydrated in no time.
Most of our water filters are the size and shape of an average water bottle, and all of our water filters can easily fit in a backpack. If you’re looking for an option that provides you with filtration and a little bit of storage, consider the Aquamira Water Filtration Bottle, the Guardian Emergency Water Filtration Bottle, or the Katadyn MyBottle Purifier.
The LifeStraw Personal Water Filter is the most portable and practical option and is really just an amazing piece of technology. A lightweight (2oz) plastic tube that can hang around your neck, you can stick the LifeStraw directly into the nearest pond, lake, or river, and drink up. The LifeStraw removes 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of waterborne protozoan parasites.
If you’re seeking something a little more “heavy-duty”, the Katadyn Vario Dual Technology Microfilter and the Katadyn Hiker Microfilter are portable filters that are capable of filtration larger amounts of water in short periods of time (2 quarts and 1 quart per minute, respectively). Both of these user-friendly filters come with a carry bag, bottle adapter, and pre-filter.
